the band
Karalta is a three piece band that fuses together metal, jazz, rock and funk creating their own unique sound. The centre of this sound comes from the combination of a six string bass, a seven string guitar and a wide range of musical influences such as jazz musician Charlie Hunter and bands like Pulse Ultra, Finch and Incubus.
Originally formed in 2003, karalta was the brainchild of long time friends Scott Walker and Luke Ince who had the concept of bringing together the interesting musical sounds of jazz with the power of detuned rock and metal. The pair recorded some initial demos which lead to them finding a drummer, Jake Flood, and getting headlining show slots at local touring venues such as ‘The Joiners’ in Southampton.
Within a few months of the line up being completed, the band decided to record the first body of songs which became their nine track album entitled ‘Another’. This album was released in August 2005 to favourable reviews. The band played numerous live shows in support of this release sharing stages with bands like Johnny Panic, Toupe, 209 and Inner Mantra.
In 2006 the band began recording their follow up EP ‘Shining from Shadows’, which was released over the internet at the beginning of 2008. The band is currently supporting this release and playing live shows across the South of England.

I first began playing music when I was seven (having piano lessons for about a year and a half) but it wasn't until I was 15 that I first picked up a guitar (or rather ordered myself a left handed guitar). I spent my teenage years in Cornwall where I joined a couple of bands through college, inspired by local bands such as Rootjuice, Goon Town and The Turkeys. I played my first gig in 1996 at the Blue Anchor in Fraddon. Later that year I moved to Southampton (to go to university) and after two years away from the band environment I co-founded the funk, rock outfit known as 'Azwethinkweiz'. During the life of the band we played numerous gigs around the Southampton/Basingstoke/Reading area and reached the quarter finals of the national Budweiser Battle of the Bands Competition. In 2000 Azwethinkweiz disbanded and I began learning to sing, play the drums and also to play the bass. Soon after Counterpoint was formed with three members of Azwethinkweiz and two new members (Greg Schaper (now in Moral Lowground) and singer Christian Stoner). This band was kind of unique as it incorporated two bass players and one guitar player. We played a number of gigs around the local area as well as playing in the 2002 Emergenza battle of the bands competition, reaching the area finals. This allowed us to play at some nice local venues such as The Brook in Southampton and The Wedgewood Rooms in Portsmouth (both to capacity crowds). Counterpoint disbanded in 2003 and Karalta was formed soon after with me taking on lead vocal duties for the first time. I am still actively playing four instruments and frequently play at open mic nights around the area.

I got my first guitar for my 13th birthday, but didn’t really take it seriously until I was 16 and trying to relieve the boredom of living on the Isle of Wight. At 17 I joined my first real band, unfortunately the bass player had to go, so I took over bass duties… and then discovered the Red Hot Chili Peppers… strangely my next few bands sounded rather similar to them.

Started playing drums at twelve and now after a nine month break from playing live I been discovered by Karalta, a band spookily pre-tailored to my personal style, taste and attitude. Behind me are four years of 'this is prologue', four years of 'outinside', a short spell with 'blacknielson' and various jams and sessions (including a session for Earthtone9). I have previously supported Cave in, Hundred Reasons, Sparta, Wilt, Kids near water, This girl, Minus, Cradle of filth, Anathema, One minute silence, Earthtone9, Pist on and Stamping ground. Influences include Primus, Deftones, incubus and tool.
